“Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.” - Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities

The aim of a Study Tour is to glimpse something of the desires and fears of a new landscape, to follow the thread of its discourse and try to work out its rules, however absurd. This temporary relocation to another city helps students understand something of the ‘secret discourse’ of a city as manifested in its landscapes and urban form but often ignored in day to day life.

Under the unique circumstances of this year, we undertook a ‘virtual study tour’, using the resources of the internet to navigate to spaces and places around the world, of interest for landscape architects. The work below represents a selection of students' interpretive drawings, paintings, and collages, each offering a projection of the character and qualities of their selected landscape.
