Rievaulx Abbey

In sequence - a wonderful piece of considered contemporary design-modest, contextual; subtly referencing the architecture of the abbey through the pitched roof and vertical screen, the bench at the entrance referencing the monks pews, but also providing shelter when the visitor centre is closed. Inside, the double height space, finished in white washed stain evokes the soaring abbey behind, strengthened by the full height window and the passage to the abbey is a simple opening that takes you through the shop (inevitably) past the outdoor cafe, nestled in to the side of the building and up to the abbey.
