Known as the ‘Queen of Shrubs’, lilacs have been blooming and sweetening the air with their fragrance across the country. Their four-petalled flowers are beautiful to look at, and you can find varieties in shades of purple, pink, white and blue. Most lilacs have a short but sweet-smelling flowering season, but a variety called the ‘Bloomerang’ lilac (Syringa ‘Penda’) reblooms with an encore into summer and even autumn. Lilacs are known for their hardy nature and long lives, and many shrubs live to be more than 100 years old.
