After the launch of the urban design project in Lancaster students have prepared townscape studies, surveyed the site and developed an individual urban design strategy and framework.
The next stage of the project comprises a more resolved design development process of selected areas of the site. The first part of this engagement will be accomplished through physical modelling to test and confirm ideas about the relationship of mass and void, function and identity.
To introduce the students to these often unfamiliar concepts and the means of transferring ideas in to three dimensional spatial design, Carolyn Willitts of CW Studio ran a workshop session on sketch modelling. Students were given the opportunity to experiment with shape and form, light and shadow, utilising a basic set of found materials, to interrogate and progress their thinking.
