Merz Barn as the Backdrop for MLA-2 Idea Creation

For the second year running, Ian Hunter and Celia Larner hosted us at the Cylinders Estate in Langdale. After a long day on the coach exploring the project location for the year, they welcomed us with a fire, glasses of wine and a barbecue. 3 young artists from London, on a residency at the estate presented their work in progress in different parts of the estate, culminating in some ghostly guitar music in almost complete darkness in the Merz Barn itself. The spirit of Kurt Schwitters was definitely abroad.

On the following day, students worked on Kurt Schwitters - style collages and installations in the woods using found materials, to respond to the place and their experience of the Cumbrian landscape. This was interspersed with scything lessons from Ian and apple games on the hill.

After the torrential rain of last year, the weather was kind to us this time and the visit was a great success with some really evocative and thoughtful work produced.
