2018 Induction Project: Rethinking the Campus

Updated: Nov 3, 2018

This year's MLA Induction Project focused on the MMU campus and challenged students to come up with bold visions for the future development of different aspects of the university's public realm. Groups were each assigned to one of 3 different themes: Edge, Void, Route, as a means of generating diverse proposals covering all the main areas of the campus landscape. The lead consultants on the Campus Public Realm Strategy, Planit-ie and Placemarque, collaborated with Patrick Hanfling of Manchester City Council, in support of the project and acted as judges at the final presentation. All external bodies involved were extremely impressed by the high standard of thinking and presentation exhibited by all student groups and we have been invited to continue to collaborate with the design team as the Public Realm proposals develop over the next few months.

The winning entry was Group A: Oxford Plaza, and a further prize was awarded to Group B: Rediscovering the Mancunian Underpass by Placemarque for their ideas around Wayfinding. Congratulations especially go to both winning groups, but to all students for the exceptional energy, cooperation and imagination displayed during this intensive week.
